I met Ariel at WWDC in San Francisco last year while with the IE Singapore delegation to meet chief Apple executives in a round table. She asked for a quote she could use in today's iPad article and this is what I wrote to her in full.

"Hi Ariel,

I have been very well, indeed! And I hope the same for you too.

It will be a pleasure to be given the opportunity to share my thoughts. In fact, the iPad has been on my mind ever since the announcement this morning. I was one of those that stayed up to hear it 'live' on http://live.twit.tv.

My immediate thoughts are that many initial responses that I have heard and read thus far have made a critical mistake in their evaluation of the iPad. To think of it in terms of what it replaces (your laptop or your iPhone, for example) will be the greatest error any developer can possibly make right now. Unless I am very much mistaken, Apple made it quite clear that they are creating something new with the iPad and to think of it in any other terms would be equal to having a falling-out with Apple themselves.

I don't mean this in the glassy-eyed, hero-worshipping manner of a fully mesmerised zombie of the Apple hype and cult. The very potholes that people accuse Apple of leaving unfilled with the iPad are the same ones that represent the greatest opportunities for developers to creatively fill.

To that end, my mind has been working non-stop and the more I think about it, the more I am elated by the possibilities represented by the iPad. I have since opened a new application proposal in my inventor's notebook and am now amassing the support and resources necessary to bring my latest application idea to fruition. So potent is this idea that whenever I share it in confidence with potential partners and investors, I am not ashamed to say that it could very possibly be the kind of app that Apple would (and should) consider installing in every iPad made.

What does this mean for me as a developer? It means that I have been given the golden opportunity to help change the world for the better, together with Apple. And I am fully convinced of my destiny in that respect.

For My iPhone Keynote Today...

... I needed a visualiser for the demos, so I built one. :)

Just thought to share this with everyone. I won't go so far as to call it a hack, but I sure built something not found in the manual that came with the box. :)

Quick build notes:

1. Needed to make a stable 2-legged structure (instead of 3, and general lack of bricks) so that the audio cable at the top of the iPhone can run freely while switching from portrait to landscape
1a. Made a square rig then found the 'centre of gravity'? to extend the legs
2. Needed enought width so that it can do landscape as well
3. Limited by just the pieces from one box (LEGO 5867)
4. Needed the fixed height
5. Used the ancient FireWire iSight paired with Quicktime Player in movie recording mode
6. Had to make sure the iSight cable was kept properly out of the way and not prone to destabilizing the structure
7. The last time I touched LEGO was probably primary school :)

Total cost : iSight (lying around) + LEGO 5867 ($42.90) + about 1.5 hours

I'm all pumped for today for more than one reason :) Since I won't be the only person with a keynote.

Here's a quick guide to setting up for the song Cajun Moon - J J Cale

Set your Key to F#

Referencing the guitar tabs, do the following conversion...

Change all Em7 to 6:6
Change all A to 2:2m
Change all B7 to 3:3m

Explaining a 'split':

whenever you see two numbers written out like x:x it means you are being told exactly what to play for both your left (bass) and your right (harmony). So for 2:2m, you will play a 2 with your left finger and a 2m with your right finger.

The next step after knowing the right numbers to hit is to know when to hit them. The rhythm style you use to 'hammer' them on the Chordica will give you the sense of different music styles. Try experimenting with tapping them together with the music as it plays and see if you can get a feel of tapping with style.

Japan Log 01 : Day 1, Osaka Castle

We arrive at Kansai Airport early in the morning, about 6-7am. Without wasting any time, our tour leader swept us from the airport straight onto the coach to make our way to our first tourist spot. On the way there, morning broke beautifully over the coastline and I did my best to capture it through the window of the coach.

I took a couple more shots along the way, but since I've determined to only showcase highlights, the next shot takes us to the park surrounding Osaka Castle itself.

We were told that the weather in Japan was rather quirky this time round, somehow transiting from spring back to winter and thus upsetting all the predictions on when we'd be able to see some blossoms. With that in mind, I thought to frame the picture above, with the distinction between trees on the left and right. It might be a stretch of interpretation, but one way to look at it is how we normally read from left to right, and thus the transition from green to bare.

Or, I was just trigger-happy and this just happens to be a park scene. :)

Walking along further, we came across a rather interesting metal barrier.

If it were snowing or I had more of a wintery backdrop, this picture would look positively *cold*. Frozen chicken wings, anyone?

But of course the highlight of coming to Osaka Castle would be to see the castle, wouldn't it? And so it was, as we approached it, that we saw it towering over all the busy tourists trying to get the whole castle in frame with their faces somewhere alongside it.

Some tourists and tour groups were really getting into the spirit of things...

... but for my wife and I, we came to Japan for one thing *primarily*... Food. So it didn't take us long to discover the chain of requisite snack shops and their corresponding wares in our faces.

Our first taste of something made in Japan. The octopus balls were huge and steaming in the cold weather, both rather welcoming facts to us poor singaporeans hardly used to the stinging chill of the frequent morning breezes.

We decided to walk about the area instead of going into the castle because we didn't want to spend unneccessarily. Remember? Money is for food only. Well, mostly.

So we checked out a couple of things, and I happened across this bin which made my trigger finger twitch. It would only be much later that we would learn how *hard* it is to actually find a trash bin in Japan. Well, specifically Tokyo. But more on that in the logs to come.

Soon, it was time to gather the tour group and return to our coach to rush off to our next tourist spot. This rushing and tight scheduling would be a theme that would repeat itself over the next few grueling days. And so we bid Osaka Castle a fine morning farewell.

Japan Log 00 : The Prequel

1705. So the counter on my Nikon D100 tells me. And that not counting the photos taken with the Canon A80. It's going to be tough choosing only the best pictures to accompany what I hope will be a decent travel log.

But before getting into Japan Day 1, here's a little backstory leading up to it.

Kris and I originally wanted to go to Japan during a season that has not much rainfall predicted and with a temperature range that's not too cold or hot. However, as we were investigating the best time for me to take my block leave, Kris happened upon a piece of news that saying that a Tokyo Anime Fair would be held in Japan on March 22-25 2007. This led us to check up the dates around that particular day.

Our idea, in order to sample as much of Japan as we could on our maiden trip, was to book a package tour of about 7 days and then extending for another week for free and easy travel.

After checking with several tour agencies around Chinatown, we decided to settle for CTC. compared to all other agency staff, CTC's was professional and very helpful (Jeffrey and Melvin). Not to mention the fact that they had a confirmed group going on March 11.

So in no time at all, we found ourselves on a JAL flight to Osaka.

For our planned trip to Japan this April, we're hoping to move around Tokyo on some free and easy days. As Kris and I were discussing it, it occured to me to think about having a GPS system to aid our travels. So it begs the question:

How do you know when you've just had a great dinner experience?

- When dinner somehow lasts from 7:30pm to 12 midnight
- When you start making all sorts of excuses to come back
- When the people you've invited make all sorts of excuses to come back
- When you give up trying to make excuses to come back and just say "I'm coming back no matter what"

Thanks to Lili, Kris and I have been introduced to this really great cafe that has so impressed us that we're taking every opportunity/excuse to go back there. Our first introduction to it was for Kris' surprise birthday party, and quick to follow on its heels, my birthday party.

No two days from that, it's going to be our 1st anniversary celebration at said cafe. :P

So much has happened in our first year of married life. We really should have documented them but lazy we did become. Apologies to all!

Buy A Powerbook G4 For $1200?

The time has come for me to consider updating my personal laptop. For anyone that's keen on a rather well-spec'd Powerbook G4 12", here are some pics of my unit.

The processor is a 1.33GHz PowerPC G4.

The battery still has 92% of the original capacity according to Coconut Battery app.

The RAM has been maxed to 1.25GB.

It comes with a SuperDrive, which means DVD burning.

The display is powered by GeForce FX Go5200 AGP with 64MB VRAM.

It was bought around Oct 2004.

What's In A Box

It used to be that nearly every corner in Singapore had a dustbin, allowing us to attempt to maintain a clean and green city. These days, there are places where it's next to impossible to find a bin due to fears of terrorists exploiting them as convenient bomb drops.

It's in such an environment that we have public service messages telling everyone to report any suspicious-looking packages and bags that are left unattended to. So, when we happened across a curious sight in a crowded shopping centre, we stopped to observe just how people reacted to it.

Having a father-in-law that works in a hardware shop is really handy, especially when you get stuff like staff discounts. We spent a whole sunday afternoon looking at fixtures and appliances, and even saw stuff that amounted to the total of our renovation cost! Some kind of fancy shower costing $19,000+ and it was already sold too.

Essentially, we opted not to have a guestbook for our wedding. Instead, we prepared cards for every guest on every table, and the Kazoku agents passed them out in sealed envelopes while this secret message was playing on the screen. That would be 'phase 2'.

(Unknown to all, even our Kazoku agents, the actual Time Capsule they were protecting was hidden in the simple red square pedestal that the powerbook was resting on. The powerbook was a 'red herring', a fancy decoy running nonsense programs spitting out nonsense text and numbers. *grin*)

At the end of the high tea reception, the cards were to be sealed in time capsules dated for opening in the future.

All that's left would be to open the capsules on our anniversaries in 2008 and 2015 and see what our guests wrote. We'll feature some of the interesting and unique ones on our vlog and website then.

Guests arriving at the wedding should notice a special display table with 2 ibooks and a powerbook near the entrance to the ballroom foyer.

The ibooks had on their screens a curious animated screensaver with the words "project CRON" and the powerbook, sitting between them upon a red square pedestal was running some strange programs that filled four screen windows with text and numbers... Just what exactly was Project:CRON?

And after waking up bright and early on wedding morn...

The very first case of Murphy's Law. In almost typical sitcom fashion, the groom and groom's men find themselves stuck at the driveway because the keys to the car in the driveway blocking the bridal car are locked in the car's boot. :P

Thankfully, uncle Bobby drove all the way from his home to our place to unlock the boot with a spare key. We arrived at Kris' place just in time to 'snatch' the bride, not giving the sisters much time to 'play' us.

In fact, we even got the chance to 'play' them... but more on that in the official video, I believe.

Just got back from our honeymoon and am now processing all the vids we took. We start our vlogging from the night before the wedding...

Most grooms hope to have an early night the day before the wedding (those that don't do stag nights, of course) but something usually pops up to keep them occupied. Who would have thought that for my wedding, it'd be sticky pens?

Final sleeping time: 3am... Wake-up time: 5am... Total sleep time: 2 hours.

One-Third of our Lives

Know how it is that we probably spend 1/3 of our lives on our beds? Well, we figured that we'd better invest in a good mattress then, and what we got came rather highly recommended. It's been said that a distinguished Singaporean (guess who? :P) bought from this brand too (for his daughter, I believe it was).

I guess I can sleep well knowing that other significant people who would value a good rest after a hard day's work chose items of similar quality (or brand, at least :P)

Speechless In Singapore

Speechless from joy, that is! We finally got to pick our unit and it's no less than our 6th choice! We're really very thankful to God for it.

Our 1st and 2nd choices were showflats which were quickly snapped up right on the first day of selection. Our selection was on the second day and, just as we were told, chances were slim for us getting one of those.

Our 3rd to 5th choices were in an area that had units that were laid out differently from the other 5-room apartments we were looking at. We really liked the unique layout and the location. But so did some other people, it seems. :P

Still, it doesn't mean that we're not happy with our 6th choice, which is the one we finally got. There's lots going for it, and it was the top choice we had for the particular premium apartments area so it's all really very good. :D

Our New Home, The 353rd Choice

To our surprise and delight, the Housing Development Board of Singapore informed us just this morning that there were available units for us to purchase with the Walk-In-Selection scheme.

So it was a mad rush down to HDB Hub just to get a queue number. Obviously, it's a first-come-first-served scheme, so this means that 352 people get to select their choice units before it comes to our turn.

What I was thinking would be couple of 'artist's impressions' of the couple or stuff done to a 1024x768 wallpaper with some prominent display of the wedding date so that people can be reminded of it right on their desktop!

Maybe something with the cheese theme... hmmm... Or shoujo and shounen and everything in-between :P

Four Meet From Four Science Six

After 1990, I've not seen any of my secondary school classmates, making it 15 years of separation. Then, all of a sudden, when I'm thinking how nice it'll be to invite my 4S6 buddies to the wedding, a most fortunate turn of events occur.

So here's the story. Lowell calls Starhub helpdesk and of all the people, he gets connected to Robin 'Joel' Ng. Robin notices both the name and the IC number, thus suspecting that this could be the Lowell of 4S6.

At the end of the call, he asks, "Can I ask you a personal question?" and then finds out that Lowell was really from SJI.

If that wasn't surprising enough, he discovers that a number of classmates are still in contact, some quite regularly so. Robin then gives my email to Lowell who organises a lunch.

Got to meet him, Dennis Foo and Kenneth Kua and we had a good time and laugh talking of old times and some updates on how things have been.

I'm looking forward to meeting up with more 4S6 buddies and inviting them all for the wedding.

Kenneth mentioned some regular sports every Tuesday, like badminton or tennis and I do hope to join up then. I've been starved of exercise due to my prolonged cough. Thank God it's getting much better now.

The Clean Room Experience

The second phase of our moving into a new place involved cleaning up the whole of the 3rd floor of my grandma's place. It was very dusty and dirty all over, so we spent an entire, back-breaking saturday cleaning every nook and cranny.

We're left with the bedroom to clean, and then it is on to the paint jobs. We downloaded a nifty program that allows you to do virtual room make-overs. More on that on the painting vlog to come.

Today, we'll be heading to the tailors (Ted's Collection) for my fitting of the suit. I had to bring along my dinner jacket, two types of shirts, and the pair of shoes I'll be using for the wedding.

You know, I think it's typical for the bride to go through more changes of clothes throughout the entire wedding ceremony, but this time round, it looks like the groom's on fashion parade.

Probably all thanks to my cosplay roots. *chuckle* I bet some of you recognise what I'll be using for my dinner jacket.

Powerbook Doublelife

Apple isn't the only one leading a double-life. My powerbook now sports two operating system versions, the latest Tiger (10.4.2) and the former Panther (10.3.9). The reasons for this setup are many but they may change in the future.

Oh, any for those of you that noticed, the harddisk skins are not accurate, but they were the only ones that I thought were nice enough to use from iconfactory.com's Xtra Drives set.

Crab! You Butter Believe It!

Together with my best friend (and thus best man), his wife and Kris, we went down to a spot recommended by him to try out some crabs. Turned out to be quite a delectable feast costing a grand total of SGD$120+.

No regrets on the terribly sinful butter crab. Next time, we'll just cut to the chase and ignore all other cooking styles.

Our First Home Appliance

Kris is really keen on baking and stuff and so we shopped around for a good deal and found this electric oven for SGD$199 at Courts. We decided to test it by making durian puffs. Both of us took a half-day leave on friday and bought durians at Bugis, near her workplace before heading to my place for the test. It's our first time baking puffs.

After making a few batches, I sent some over to my grandma and my uncle's family that lives next to her. Kris took some back for her family. Seems like they liked it!

(Kris hates the durian smell but she knows I really like durian, so it was really really nice of her to propose we try this. *hugs*)

Househunting - Grandma House Survey

Due to a racial quota limit, we're not able to pick a new home at Punggol, which is our only reasonable choice for a new place to call home. So in the meantime, while we wait for openings in either resale flats or new HDB offerings, we're going to be putting up at my Grandma's. It's really quite a nice house too.

We spent some time measuring the room so that we can paint the walls as well as install new curtains.
